In this day and age, we all are transitioning to using digital gadgets for everything. It is therefore not surprising that you would want to know how to draw a Venn diagram using Google Docs.

Whether you are just a Mathematics student looking for a way to do your Venn diagram assignment in Google docs, a Mathematics teacher wanting to make notes, or set questions involving Venn diagram in Google docs, or you need to draw a Venn diagram for a different reason, this article will provide you with all the information you need to achieve your goal.

Let’s take a look at three different methods via which you can draw a Venn diagram using Google docs.

  1. Drawing in Google docs using the inbuilt drawing tool
  2. Using Google Drawings
  3. Using Lucidchart Diagram add-on

You will therefore learn how to draw Venn diagrams in Google docs using all the above-mentioned methods.

How to Make a Venn diagram using Google Docs inbuilt drawing tool

Even though Google docs doesn’t have Venn diagrams by default, there is a drawing tool available in Google docs with which you can create Venn diagrams.

To use the drawing tool in Google docs to create a Venn diagram, follow the steps below:

  • Click on the Insert tab
  • Hover over Drawing
  • Click on New

You will be presented with the drawing tool just as shown below.

To create a Venn diagram, you will need the following:

  • 2 or more circles
  • A rectangle
  • Some text

This means that you are going to make use of the circle and rectangle shapes. Then add text to the respective areas.

Now let’s take a look at how to add the shapes (circle and rectangles) to your drawing. The icon representing shapes is the one with the circle over the rectangle. That icon comes right after the line icon.

Click on that Icon and hover over shapes to have a look at all the available shapes.

To draw a circle, look for the circle shape and click on it. After clicking on it, you can start drawing with it. But to ensure that you draw a perfect circle and not just an oval shape at all, you have to hold down your shift key whiles drawing out your circle.

You may either want to remove the fill color or change the fill color. For the purposes of this illustration, let me remove the fill color. This is done by clicking on the fill color icon (the paint bucket icon at the top)

Click on the fill color icon and click on the transparent button at the bottom.

Copy and paste the circle you have created to create the second one. Drag the second one to position it well in the way you want your Venn diagram to look.

Now, go ahead and insert your rectangle. The process is similar to how you added the circle. After drawing your rectangle, it may come with a color that will fill the space and hide your circles. You should therefore remove the fill color and make it transparent so the circles beneath it will be visible.

The last thing to add will be your text. Click on the textbox icon (represented with the letter T inside a square).

Drag your mouse to create a textbox where you want to type. You can then copy and paste the text you type at the various parts of the Venn diagram that you may need text just as shown below.

Once you are done, click on the Save and Close button. The moment you close it, your Venn diagram will appear within your current document.

You can always edit any part of the Venn diagram by double-clicking on it. The drawing tool will be opened any time you double-click on the Venn diagram.

How to use Google Drawings to make a Venn diagram for a Google docs

Similar to using the drawing tool in Google docs, Google has made available Google drawing as a standalone tool that you can use to draw things outside your Google documents and import them into your documents anytime you want.

To use Google drawings, click on this link to open it: Google Drawing Link

The process for drawing your Venn diagram is pretty much the same as we discussed earlier with the drawing tool in Google docs. Therefore, follow the same steps to create your Venn diagram.

The drawing will be saved in your Google Drive so you can reuse it whenever you want.

To use the Venn diagram that has been stored in your Google drive, follow the steps below.

How to Insert Venn diagram from Google Drive into Google Docs

  • Click on the Insert tab
  • Hover over Drawing
  • Click on “From Drive”

Locate the specific file (Venn diagram) that you are looking for and click on it. The select button will be activated. Click on the select button.

You will be offered two options. The first option “Link to source” will allow you to edit the diagram and update it from the source whiles the second option “Insert unlinked” doesn’t allow you to edit. Make your choice and click on the “Insert” button.

Here is the result of the steps above
