Why is my Location Icon Always On

The possibility to turn your location on, on an Android phone and be able to share location data as well is undoubtedly very helpful in various ways.

With the location data, you can track and know the location of your kids, share your own location with someone, find directions to places and use some apps (like Google maps app) that need your location data to function properly.

The drawbacks of this feature can be overlooked due to the merits one can enjoy when using it and using it well.

However, it is not uncommon to hear complaints of the location icon being on without it being turned on by the user. This can be worrying as one may not be too sure of what information is being collected or shared.

The reason you are here is to find solutions to this problem. We will be looking at the factors that cause this, how to stop them and how the location icon being on for no reason affects your phone.

Reasons why your location Icon is Always on

The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides users with positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. Once, your location icon is turned on it means that the GPS service is active on your phone. There are a number of apps that depend on the GPS service and hence their functionality is affected based on whether your location icon is on or off.

Thus, GPS allows for the functioning of some apps. Without your location icon being on, these apps may not run at all or may not perform to their optimal ability.

When your location is disabled (i.e. your location icon is off) before opening an app that uses it, you are most likely to get a permission request to enable it.

If after using the app, you do not disable it, it might continue to work in the background and other apps that you may not have wanted to use your location may be using it. In most cases, you can disable the location right after the app starts working but in using Google maps, you need to leave it on and only turn it off when you are done using the app.

Hence, the commonest reason why your location icon is always on will be the fact that there are apps that are using the GPS service in the background. Once, these apps are still running, they will be forced to turn on your location icon.

If you want to prevent your location icon from being on always, then you would have to ensure that all background apps or processes that use GPS services are turned off or terminated whenever they are not needed.

Does Leaving Location Icon On Always Drain Battery?

Leaving the location icon on always does not directly affect your battery or does not necessarily cause battery drainage.

However, when your location icon is on and an app that requires your GPS service is opened, it will make use of energy from your battery to operate thus, affecting the battery. With that in mind, it can be said that the location icon being on affects the battery but not in the way you may anticipate.

For instance, when you search for the location of say the nearest restaurant or direction to the museum on Google maps, this command will activate the GPS to find the data from the internet.

More battery power is being used than what would have been consumed if the location was just on.

If you want to prevent your location icon from draining your battery when it is on, then you would have to make sure that you don’t have apps or background processes using your GPS services when your location icon is on.

You can also try and turn off your location using the steps described above.
